Arnold Zweig, 65-year-old world famous German novelist and prominent Zionist in pre-Nazi Germany, has been relieved of his duties as president of the academy of Arts of East Germany at his own request, the press reported here today.
Mr. Zweig, who fled Germany during the Nazi era, spent two years in Palestine. Although an ardent Zionist, he apparently feet keenly his exile from the German reading public and after the war returned to Germany. He was honored by the Soviet authorities when he returned.
