Three anti-Semites who persecuted a young Jewish engineer Leithin so badly that he committed suicide, were sentenced to jail terms of five, eight and twelve months respectively. The chief of the accused, the factory leader Schanin, committed suicide during the trial. The mild sentences for the three defendants were the result of evidence during the trial showing that they were not directly responsible for the tragic death of Leithin.
The young Jewish engineer was in charge of a factory which was turning out defective work. Some of the men blamed him personally for the failure of the factory work in bitter letters posted on the factory wall newspaper.
Later they organized a mock funeral procession in which they carried a coffin bearing Leithin’s name. When he saw the procession Leithin blanched and immediately afterward cut his throat.
