Application for a decrease in the import duty of Matzoth to Soviet Russia for the forthcoming Passover was made to the Soviet Ambassador here, Mr. Krestinsky, by Rabbi Leo Baeck, acting for the German committee formed to provide Russian Jews with Matzoth.

The Soviet Government, which has granted permission for the importation into Russia of fifty carloads of Matzoth, previously set the cake tariff of two and a half roubles per kilogram on Matzoth. The Berlin committee, through Ambassador Krestinsky, urged that the duty be decreased to five kopeks per kilogram. The Soviet Government replied, decreasing the duty to eighty kopeks. This, however, is considered to high and the Berlin committee, through Dr. Baeck, has appealed for a further reduction. A reply is expected on Friday.
