A number of Soviet officials are to be tried and severely punished for compelling Jewish colonists in the Jankoy region to join collectives against will, it was announced today.
In the meantime the Crimean government has ordered that individual Jewish peasants, as well as those in collectives, be supplied with seeds. As a result of the compulsory measures, the Jewish colonists are without forage and are therefore unable to start their Spring sowing.
The situation is worse in the Kherson region, where the Jewish colonists have no bread because during the intensified collectivization, everything was taken from them. The Agro-Joint is now providing them with 25,000 puds of flour.
The general mood among the Jewish colonists is now greatly improved since the Communist party’s order not to force collectivization was issued. In many Jewish collectives the colonists are returning to the individual system. Dr. Joseph Rosen, director of the Agro-Joint’s work, has arrived in Moscow and will leave for Crimea this week to witness the change.
