The Soviet Union, through its controlled press, has sharply attacked Sens. George McGovern (D. S.D.) and Henry M. Jackson (D, Wash.) for their outspoken criticism of the Soviet regime’s treatment of its Jewish citizens, McGovern, the Democratic Presidential nominee, was attacked In an article in the Soviet weekly, Za Rubezhom, “for urging permission for the emigration of Soviet Jews to Israel.”
Today’s issue of the Soviet government newspaper, Izvestia, called Jackson a pawn of the American “military-industrial complex,”and said that his amendment to the East-West Trade Act linking improved US-Soviet trade relations with the Soviet “diploma tax” on Jews wishing to emigrate was an attempt to “sabotage the Soviet-American trade relations.” McGovern called the attack a “crude form of interference in our American election” which “deserves condemnation as such.” There was no immediate comment from Jackson.
