U. S. Senators today condemned the purge of Jewish and other books from the American Exhibition in Moscow.
Sen. Styles Britges, New Hampshire Republican, said: “The Jews of this country should be greatly flattered that the Soviets culled out Leo W. Schwartz Great Ages and and Ideas of the Jewish People, Speaking on the Senate floor, the senator added: “The fine heritage of the Jews offers meat and drink too strong for the Kremlin’s stomach. I have read the book. It is a great book. “
Sen. Hubert H. Humphrey, Minnesota Democrat, said “The Soviets removed some splendid essays on the people of the Jewish faith. This is excellent literature which should be read. ” Sen. Bridges criticized American liberals for failing to “raise the cry of book-burning. “
