The rare occurrence of the Soviet Union and Poland supporting Israel at an international conference was reported here today by two Israelis, Dr. Y. Kott and Y. Penn, who returned here today from New Delhi, where they acted as this country’s observers at the conference of International Red Cross Societies.
Israel requested that the “Mogen Dovid Ado” (Red Shield of David), the Israeli equivalent of the Red Cross, be permitted to use its own six-point Star of David symbol in connection with Red Cross work. The request will be on the agenda of the next Red Cross international conference. At New Delhi, the Israeli request was supported by El Salvador, the Soviet Union and Poland. Israel is a signatory to the Red Cross convention but, up to now, its own symbol has not been officially recognized.
