Spain and Portugal, once countries of bitter anti-Jewish persecution, are today free of any anti-Jewish prejudice, according to enunciations by leading statesmen of the two countries.
The statements were made by Primo de Rivera, Dictator of Spain, and General Carmona, president of Portugal, in audiences which they granted to Dr. Marcus Ehrenpreis, Chief Rabbi of Stockholm, who is on a visit to the Iberian Peninsula.
Dr. Ehrenpreis made a tour of Portugal, Spain, and Morocco. In Madrid he was received by de Rivera, who emphasized that Spain of today enjoys complete religious tolerance and entertains the best sympathies toward the Jewish people.
In Lisbon, the Swedish Chief Rabbi was received by General Carmona. In the course of the audience, the Portuguese president expressed the good will of the Portuguese people toward the Jews. While in Portugal Dr. Ehrenpreis also made a study of the movement now current among the Marranos to return to Judaism.
