A pretest against the introduction of a separate Palestinian currency was presented today to the British High Commissioner, Sir Herbert Samuel, by the Executive of the Palestine Arabs, The Executive expresses the fear that the introduction of the new currency might imply a recognition of the Balfour Declaration.
Egyptian currency has been in general use in Palestine up to the present time. Since the inception of a completely independent Government in Egypt, it is considered that it would be better that Palestine’s economic structure be separated from Egypt’s financial situation.
The committee appointed to study the question of a separate Palestine currency are, in addition to the Chairman, S.S. Davis, Treasurer of the Palestine Government, the following:
Mr. J.B. Barron, Director of Customs and Trade
Mr. A.P.S. Clark, Jerusalem (Anglo Egyptian Bank)
Mr. M. Gerassimo, Jerusalem (Credit Lyonnais)
Ali Eff, Mus akim, Jaffa
Suleiman Bey Nassif, Haifa
Mr. W.C. Roll, Jerusalem (Imperial Ottoman Bank)
Mr. E. Shelley, Jerusalem (Chamber of Commerce)
Mr. J. Spagnuolo, Jerusalem (Banco de Roma)
Mr. S. Hoofien, Jaffa (Anglo Palestine Bank)
Mr. Jacobus Kann, Jerusalem, Dutch Council in Jerusalem
Mr. S. A. Van Vriesland, Jerusalem.
