The plan to cantonize Palestine, recently proposed in the House of Commons by A. C. Crossley, is endorsed in today’s issue of the influential conservative weekly, Spectator.
In a leading article on “The Palestine Turmoil,” the journal points out that the plan appears geographically practical and “politically there is very much to be said for it.”
The weekly caustically criticizes the proposed Royal Commission to investigate the Palestine disturbances, terming it an excuse for postponement and shifting of responsibility.
The article declares the scheme for Jewish settlement of Palestine as outlined in the Balfour Declaration never worked smoothly because “success means the mixture of two races that will not mix.”
It criticizes the British Government’s lack of policy with respect to Palestine and emphasizes that this is the High Commissioner’s chief difficulty.
