“The spiritual essence of Judaism,” the Roman idea of law and discipline and the British feeling for “the rights of the common man” will be fused in America to produce a lasting peace and justice and freedom for all, Vice-President Henry A. Wallace declared last night addressing a dinner in the Waldorf Astoria hotel on the occasion of the presentation to President Roosevelt of the annual award of The Churchman, a Protestant publication, given “for the promotion of good will and better understanding among peoples.”
“America, the heir of the religious concepts of Palestine and the culture of Rome and England, is building in the full sun of a new day for a peace which is not based on imperialistic intervention,” he stated. “We shall see the day,” he added, “when the sun of our America is the sun of righteousness, and when that sun will rise with healing in its wings.”
