Abe Goldstein, an East-side boy, was awarded the bantam-weight championship, amid rousing cheers and great excitement, last night. During the fifteen round bout which was held at Madison Square Garden between Goldstein and Joe Lynch, former holder of the title, Goldstein fought bravely and cleverly, refusing to be goaded by the spectators into a knockout before the fifteenth round. Lynch, who many years ago won the title from McGovern, held it, until last night, with the exception of one short period. Intense partisanship was exhibited by the audience, but the two fighters played the game like sportsmen. In his dressing room, after the loss of his title, Lynch said: “I congratulate Goldstein. He’s a nice little fellow and will be a champion hard to beat.” Goldstein, happy at his victory, was carried out on the shoulders of his enthusiastic supporters.
