Premier Menachem Begin is ready to reach an autonomy arrangement with Egypt and the United States “at the earliest possible time,” it was reported today by Howard Squadron, chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations.
Squadron, who returned yesterday from the annual American Jewish Congress Israel-American Dialogue in Israel, described a 90-minute meeting in which he and Yehuda Hellman, executive director of the Conference of Presidents, had with Begin late last week in the Premier’s home.
During the meeting, Squadron said, “the Prime Minister repeated his deep commitment to reaching an early autonomy agreement. We also agreed on the elements that are essential to reaching such an arrangement.” He said Begin was recovering physically and was “vigorous and alert in our conversation.”
