A major breakthrough in the plans for providing expanded Jewish educational and cultural facilities for the 1,600 Jewish college students in this area was hailed here by the Jewish community with the announcement that sufficient funds have been raised thus far to ensure the construction of a Hillel House, adjacent to the campus of Washington University.
A special campaign has been conducted in St. Louis for the raising of $561,000, of which $448,805 has been earmarked for the building and equipping of Hillel House. Rabbi Robert P. Jacobs, Hillel director here, said the construction of Hillel House was authorized when the campaign had reached an interim total of $349,000.
Another major addition to the Jewish educational program here was seen in the fact that Washington University will open its first faculty of Judaic Studies here in September. Rabbi Steven S. Schwarzschild will head that chair at the university.
