Stadium Maps Varied Program for Concerts, Operas This Week

Eugene Ormandy will conduct the Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra at the Lewisohn Stadium in all-Viennese program tonight. The first half will be devoted to Schubert, offering the “Rosamunde” Overture and the Eighth Symphony; the second half to Johann Strauss, including the “Fledermaus” Overture, the “Tales from the Vienna Woods,” the Blue Danube waltzes and several shorter pieces.

Tomorrow night the Hungarian conductor will feature the work of his compatriot, Zoltan Kodaly, the suite “Hary Janos.” Other selections on the program will be the Bach-Hubay Chaconne, L’Ile Joyeuse of Debussy and the Pleasure Dome of Kubla Khan by the American composer, Griffes. On Tuesday the program will include the “New World” symphony of Dvorak, Tchaikowsky’s “Francesca da Rimini,” Strauss’ Don Juan and the Ploka and Fugue from Weinberger’s opera, “Schwanda.”

On Wednesday night Mishel Piastro, concert master of the Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, will be the soloist, playing the Tchaikowsky Violin Concerto. The “Academic Festival” Overture and the Fourth Symphony of Brahms will also be played. Thursday brings the first Stadium presentation of the Fifth Symphony of Sibelius, the “Meistersinger” Overture of Wagner, Debussy’s “Afternoon of a Faun,” the “Rosenkavalier” Waltz of Strauss and Respighi’s “Pines of Rome.”

On Friday and Saturday nights the opera “Boris Gudonoff” will be sung in Russian under the baton of Alexander Smallens. George Youreneff will sing the role of the Czar. Others in the cast will include Ivan Ivantzoff as Dmitri, Vasily Romakoff as Brother Pimenn, Devora Nadworiney as the innkeeper, Michail Shvetz as Varlaam, Marguerite Hawkins as Zenia, Nadine Fedora as the nurse and Ina Bourskaya as Marina. Ballet arrangements are by Rita De Leporte. The entire production is furnished by the Art of Musica Russia, Inc., of which Ivan Ivantzoff is president. The performance will begin at 8 p. m.
