The Cabinet Committee alternates and the six American members of the former Anglo-American Committee of Inquiry on Palestine have completed their talks with Acting Secretary of State Dean Acheson and the Palestine issue will now be shifted to higher levels.
An announcement issued this afternoon by the State Department, disclosing conclusion of the discussions with Acheson, said that “it is expected that the Cabinet Committee will discuss the matter further and later report to the President.” A Department spokesman said that the Cabinet group will probably meet tomorrow.
The meeting of Acheson with the Grady and Hutcheson groups was arranged so that the Acting Secretary might have the benefit of the information and background of these gentlemen on many perplexing questions which arise out of the proposals recently reported to the House of Commons by the Lord President of the Council, Mr. Morrison, the official announcement said.
TRUMAN MAY NOT DEAL WITH PALESTINE ISSUE TILL NEXT WEEK
A White House spokesman today indicated that it was unlikely that President Truman would issue a statement on the British-proposed “federalization” plan this week. The President did not confer with anyone today on Palestine, the spokesman said.
Information reaching here from London reveals that the British Government is no longer inclined to wait for President Truman’s decision, and is determined to clamp down on Jewish immigration to Palestine even before Mr. Truman’s reaction to the “federalization” scheme is received.
Not only will the island of Cyprus become the “Ellis Island of Palestine,” but other Mediterranean islands are being prepared as reception areas to which ships with Jewish immigrants which are intercepted as sea will be diverted, one of the London reports said.
Leaders of Jewish groups, including members of the Jewish Agency executive, today discussed the “federalization” plan with influential persons here with a view to strengthening American opposition to the proposal. President Truman is being flooded with telegrams and letters from all parts of the country urging him to insist on his demand for the immediate unconditional admission of 100,000 Jews to Palestine.
In a letter to the Export-Import Bank today, Rep. Emanuel Celler protested the $10,000,000 loan the Bank is making to Saudi Arabia. He charged that U.S. oil companies were already paying Ibn Saud $25,000,000 yearly “tribute.
