The State Department has disagreed with Israel that Syria is violating the terms of the military disengagement in the Golan Heights. Israel has charged that Syria has moved mortars and heavy artillery into the buffer zone between the two countries but the Department said today it is “satisfied” that the May 30 agreement is “working well.”
“There has been further discussion about some aspects of arms limitation not agreed on in the agreement,” the Department told newsmen, “but as far as we are aware the principal elements agreed to by both sides have been implemented.” Department spokesman Robert Anderson again refused to confirm or deny the Israeli reports that large quantities of Soviet arms are being shipped into Syria.
Anderson also said that he could not yet name the Syrian representative for the “exploratory talks” being held between Middle East nations and Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger on a peace settlement. Nor could he say when the Syrian envoy will arrive here. King Hussein of Jordan will meet tomorrow with Senators in the morning at the Capitol, lunch with Kissinger at the State Department, and, with Queen Alia, dine with President and Mrs. Ford at the White House in the evening.
