Commenting on a statement by President Nasser of Egypt that the Israel-Arab dispute could be resolved only by war, a State Department spokesman today voiced opposition to the use of force in the Middle East.
State Department spokesman Robert McCloskey said: “We remain committed to the defense of the independence and territorial integrity of all Near Eastern states.” His comments were elicited by questions based on a television interview with Nasser, telecast here Sunday.
Mr. McCloskey was also queried about Nasser’s assertion that new American aid was being discussed. He said the State Department was aware of Nasser’s interest, but had not yet received a formal request for new assistance. However, there have been “informal” contacts on initiation of a new program.
