The proposal of the State Department to allocate $23,500,000 to Israel is “a poor substitute” for the grant-in-aid bill now pending before Congress and calling for $150,000,000 for Israel, Benjamin G. Drowdy, president of the Zionist Organization of America, told a press conference here today. “Needless to say that the $23,500,000 does not begin to meet Israel’s requirements,” he stressed.
Mr. Browdy announced that thus far $67,000,000 of Israel Government bonds have been subscribed and $27,000,000 in cash paid in. He reported that 40,000 American Jews have purchased Israel Government bonds and that the Z.O.A. efforts in various communities throughout the United States account for at least 75 percent of all the Israel Government bonds subscribed or paid for in the United States.
