The State Department said today it had no knowledge of proposals in Congress to move the US Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Such a proposal was made last month by Rep. Gerald R. Ford (R. Mich.), the House Minority Leader. It was endorsed yesterday by Sen. Robert P. Griffin (R. Mich.), the Senate Minority Whip, who spoke at a luncheon of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.
Questioned by newsmen, State Department spokesman Charles Bray said “I know of no plan to uproot the Embassy from Tel Aviv.” Asked if either Ford or Griffin had made such recommendation to the State Department, Bray replied, “I haven’t a clue.”
Bray had no comment on Premier Golda Meir’s visit to Rumania early next month which was announced today in Jerusalem and Bucharest. He said he had no information on reports from Cairo that President Anwar Sadat would visit Moscow prior to President Nixon’s arrival there May 22.
