State Department sources said today that the text of Prime Minister Ben-Gurion’s statement in the Knesset on Israel’s atomic research project was received by the Department and is now “under study.”
There has been no public indication as to the United States attitude towards the statement, but American officials indicate that the U.S. might later try to press the Israeli Government to open the installation to inspection by scientists of friendly countries. However, it is well recognized in Washington that the situation does not warrant public utterances which would cast any doubt on Israel’s assurances that the second nuclear reactor is directed solely to peaceful use.
