The State Department today admitted that it had advised” the U.S. Steel Corporation against taking an order for 500 tons of steel plate for shipment to Palestine. The order was placed by the Palestine Electric Corporation which needed the plates for its trucks and field equipment.

A spokesman for the Department told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that U.S. steel informally inquired of the State Department whether the plate would be subject ?o an export ban. The Department, he said, unofficially advised U.S. Steel that the contemplated plate shipment came under the ban of December 5 on the shipment of arms and munitions to the Middle East, inasmuch as it is arms and not ordinary steel plates.
