Rep Emanuel Celler today urged the U.S. delegation to the United Nations and the State Department to take action against Egypt’s arbitrary blockade of Israeli-bound shipments through the Suez Canal.
Rep. Celler pointed out in a statement that Egypt’s action violates a U. N. Security Council resolution enacted September 1, 1951. He noted that the United States has a stake in Israel arising from Export-Import Bank loans and other forms of technological and economic aid. He pointed to American participation in a treaty of 1888 guaranteeing free usage of the Suez Canal to ships of all nations.
Mr. Celler also cited recent manifestations of Saudi Arabian, Jordanian, and Syrian hostility against Israel.
