New York Republican Senator Jacob K. Javits yesterday accused the State Department of making an “intolerable” concession to Saudi Arabia in agreeing to bar U. S. Air Force personnel of Jewish faith from the Dhahran airbase.
Mr. Javits made public an exchange of letters in which Assistant Secretary of State Robert C. Hill sought to justify the Department’s arrangements with King Saud. The Senator said the deal “may be justified on security grounds, and in that I have the greatest respect for the judgment of our President.” But, he added, to tolerate such discrimination is contrary to U. S. interests and peace.
