State Department sources said today that the United States is looking to United Nations Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold to explore Israel’s complaints of Egyptian interference with Israeli cargo aboard ships of various flags transiting the Suez Canal.

These sources said Israel sought American intercession, because of recent United Arab Republic seizure of cargo of Israel origin bound through the Canal. It was explained, however, that, since Israel has also raised the issue with the United Nations, the State Department feels the international body should handle the matter. The issue was described as one with international implications that came more directly under the scope of the United Nations.
