Secretary of State George C. Marshall has ordered an investigation into charges made by American citizens interned last month by Lebanese authorities in Beirut that U.S. consular officials made anti-Semitic remarks and were dilatory in seeking their release, it was revealed here today.
In a letter to Rep. Arthur G. Klein, Marshall said the reported actions and statements attributed to the American consul in Beirut, John B. Faust, were “definitely not in accord with Department policy. Officers of the foreign service and of the Department are expected to exercise the highest degree of respect and tolerance for the rights and dignity of mankind and are constantly on the alert to avoid incidents of this kind. I have ordered an investigation and as soon as a report is submitted to the Department I will write to you again,” the letter said.
