The State Department said today that it has made known to all parties concerned with events in southern Lebanon that “the situation must be stabilized and a way found to bring all of southern Lebanon under the authority of the central Lebanese government of President Elias Sarkis.”
The Department’s chief spokesman, Hodding Carter, said “Our general attitude, as it now exists, is that the situation is extremely complicated and we are watching it with deep concern.” He said the U.S. is in contact with the governments of Lebanon, Syria and Israel “as well as leading Lebanese personalities.” He added. “We think all concerned are exercising restraint” and “we believe they have a responsibility to continue this restraint so that President Sarkis can be given a chance to bring the central authority and peace to the area.”
