William B. Macomber, Jr., Assistant Secretary of State, today reiterated in a letter to Sen. Hugh Scott, Pennsylvania Republican, that the United States “firmly supports the principle of freedom of transit through the Suez Canal as an international waterway.”
He addressed a letter reassuring Sen. Scott along the lines of previous letters dispatched in recent days to Senators Jacob Javits and Kenneth B. Keating, both of New York.
Sen. Paul H. Douglas, Illinois Democrat, today appealed to the World Bank to delay a pending loan to the United Arab Republic for Suez Canal improvement until the UAR lifts its anti-Israel blockade, Sen. Douglas is a member of the Senate Banking and Currency Committee, a committee whose views influence the World Bank.
Sen. Douglas made public his letter to Eugene R. Black, president of the World Bank. He told Mr. Black, “we have too long tolerated Arab aggression as a normal condition. ” He stressed that “the free world must not provide dollars to subsidize piracy and aggression. “
