The State Department has advised the president of the Jewish Nazi Victims Organization of America that “in spite of the current debate in the Cairo press over the possibility of a political solution to the Arab-Israel dispute, the stated policy of the UAR government is to seek such a solution.”
The department views were made known today in a letter from Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Rodger P. Davies to Moses I. Sochachevsky. The letter expressed the hope that “all states involved in the June war will be flexible and moderate in cooperating with the mission of Ambassador Jarring and that a workable peace settlement will result.”
Mr. Davies said that the United States Government “continues to be concerned with Israel’s defense requirements” and quoted the joint statement issued by President Johnson and Prime Minister Eshkol of Israel on Jan. 8.
