The State Department said today that it cannot take an official position on Jordan’s request for a Security Council meeting until it has had a chance to read Jordan’s official statement accompanying the request. It was reported earlier this month that the U.S. would cooperate with Jordan to limit the Council meeting to Israeli practices in East Jerusalem. It was further reported that the U.S. would try to have the Council pass a resolution strongly criticizing Israel’s attempts to change the “ethnic quality” of Jerusalem, believing that Israel is violating international law with her unilateral projects in the Eastern sector prior to an Israeli-Arab agreement on the future of the city.
