Israel’s 24th anniversary will be celebrated May 24 by the Legislative Assembly of Guanabara State, which at the same time will mark 150 years of Brazilian independence. The country has a total of 22 states. The Israeli celebration was approved by the Guanabara Chamber of Deputies by 39-2, one of the opponents being of Syrian descent. Rep. Levi Neves, a non-Jew, said the double fete would symbolize the friendship between Israel and Brazil, which has 150,000 Jews in a population of more than 90 million and an autocratic military government.
