A warning to the Jews of this city to stay away from the polls in the forthcoming election was issued here yesterday by Eleutherios Venizelos, former premier of Greece, who heads an anti-Jewish ticket.
“I do not wish Jews to vote for me,” the veteran politician declared, “I only desire Greek votes.”
Anti-Jewish agitation carried on by the Venizelist party and its newspapers has reached such a pitch that the governor of Salonica declared yesterday that he is considering introduction of a strict censorship over all newspapers.
Makedonia, chief Venizelist organ in Salonica, has taken the lead in the anti-Jewish campaign, accusing the Jews of all the crimes in the calendar and demanding that they be deprived of citizenship rights.
Anger of the Venizelists is directed against the Jews because they joined other Greek groups in defeating the Venizelist attempt to regain power. The present Greek government is friendly to the Jews.
