The stealing of antiquities, which is becoming a worldwide phenomenon is also occurring in Israel. The Ministry of Education and Culture’s antiquities department has teamed up with the police to help catch several of the robbers in the last few days.
One group from Hebron on the West Bank was caught digging around an ancient building on the coast. Police first spotted seven persons at the spot and later another three came to the same site, indicating the area was popular for antiquity robbers. Another three Hebron residents were surprised by an antiquities supervisor in the Judean Mountains. There have been other cases of antiquity robberies reported elsewhere in Israel.
