The Israeli Government issued a statement to the press quoting “reliable circles” as denying a report that representatives of the Stern Group told foreign correspondents that they are unwilling to observe the U.N. truce and would consider any U.K. observers as Israel’s enemies.
The government’s statement admitted that in a broadcast the Sternists had said they do not agree with the cease-fire’s acceptance. “But this is a political attitude, not a line of action,” the statement emphasized.
Meanwhile, Revisionist headquarters here issued a statement declaring that Israeli acceptance of the U.N. truce terms imperilled whatever was achieved by the proclamation of Jewish statehood. The Revisionists pointed out that Count Folke Bernadotte, the U.K. mediator, did not even mention the state of Israel until two day ago and that the mediator’s truce proposal suggested supervision for Israel, but no supervision was mentioned for the Arabs. The statement protested against the acceptance of the truce without convening the State Council.
