Eighteen members of the Stern Group, who refused to testify before a military examining judge today, and demanded that they be examined by a civilian magistrate, succeeded in having their preliminary hearing postponed.
Jerusalem military governor Dr. Bernard Joseph today notified the U.N. truce commission that an additional 30 Stern Group members have been arrested in the city within the past few days and are now “somewhere in Israel.”
The “A” faction of the General Zionist Party, by a vote of 39 to 17, voted today to join the Progressive Party formed by the Aliyah Eadashah and Eaoved Hazinoi. At the same time, Interior Minister Itzhak Gruenbaun, leader of the General Zionists “A”, announced that he will retire from politics shortly, but urged his colleagues to affiliate themselves with the Progressive Party.
Of the 37 new agricultural settlements which are to be established before the end of the Jewish year, 26 have already been established and the remaining will be set up immediately. This was disclosed today by Eliahu Dobkin, acting chairman of the Jerusalem branch of the Jewish Agency here. He added that during September a total of 11,000 Jews had arrived in Israel, and that he expected the number of Jews arriving monthly in the immediate future would increase over that figure.
