Members of the Steuben Society, German – American group which has strongly resisted Nazification, were today still discussing the ringing denunciation of the Hitler regime they listened to over at Mozart Hall in Yorkville.
The denunciation was delivered by Mrs. Rachel Pallay Panken, Socialist candidate for Congress in the Fourteenth Congressional district, who appeared before the society by invitation of its officials.
Pointing out in her speech that she belongs to the groups that have been singled out for persecution by the Hitler regime, she also took occasion to reprove, by inference, those of her audience who approve of the Nazi policies.
“It is fortunate,” she declared, “that the traditions of the American people and their love for freedom of thought and opinion makes it possible for me to speak to you at this gathering, even though there are some here who approve the policies of the present German government.
“As a Socialist,” Mrs. Panken went on, “I detest all that Hitlerism stands for. I know of nothing that reveals how far a nation could revert to primitive barbarism. Its racial intolerance, its destruction of every form of democratic procedure, its elevation of the lowest instincts have filled the world with a sense of revulsion that it will take generations to overcome.”
