The recently published letter from the political committee of the Steuben Society alleging to have put the Society on record as supporting George F. Ewald’s appointment as a magistrate because he had been “selected so carefully by the Steuben Society from its Christian stock in our ranks” was repudiated by the Steuben Society at a recent special meeting, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency learns today.
The letter sent by O. P. Spenrath, John J. Meyer and Dr. Francis Schirp on official stationery was declared by the Steuben Society to have been issued without its knowledge and authorization. The contents of the letter as revealed during the office-bartering trial of Martin J. Healy and Thomas T. Tommaney were characterized as a gross violation of the principles of the Steuben Society both in fact and in spirit.
This letter has created considerable stir in the ranks of the Steuben Society which is a non-sectarian organization composed of American citizens. The Society has many Jewish members. Among the Jews who have played a conspicuous role in the activities of the society are former Magistrate Oberwager and David Meyer.
