A campaign to force authorities of the Milwaukee State Teachers’ college to rescind their ban on the college band’s proposed concert tour of Germany has been launched by local units of the Steuben society.
The tour had been called off by Dr. Frank E. Baker, president of the college, following protests from local societies and revelations that the tour would be partly subsidized by the German government.
A resolution assailing the journey’s ban was adopted by the Steuben society. Copies were sent to Governor A. G. Schmedeman, the State board of normal school regents, Dr. Baker and John Callahan, State superintendent of public instruction. Their intervention to lift the ban is sought by the society.
Good-will between America and Germany would result from the tour, the resolution declared, demanding the band itself be given the sole right to decide on the junket. Opposition groups were called “intolerant and un-American.”
