The role of the Jews in the development of America is described in a new pamphlet published today by the National Jewish Welfare Board and the American Association for Jewish Education in booklet form as the first of a “Jewish Information Series” for distribution among men of Jewish faith in the nation’s armed forces.
Entitled “The Story of the Jews in the United States,” the pamphlet traces the history of the Jews on this continent from the time of Christopher Columbus, through colonial and revolutionary days, down to the present. It tells the story of such Revolutionary War civilian heroes as Aaron Levy, Joseph Simon and Haym Salomon, and describes the exploits of Commodore Urish P. Levy and Captain John Ordroneaux on the military front.
The booklet records in some detail the part played by the Jews in the Civil War and reveals that four Jews were promoted to the rank of general in the Union Army, while seven were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for distinguished gallantry. Three men in John Brown’s band were Jewish, according to the pamphlet.
