Nathan Straus, Jr., of New York, and Leib Jaffe, Palestinian Zionist leader, opened the United Palestine Appeal here last night at a well-attended meeting. Seventeen thousand dollars was raised. Both Mr. Straus and Mr. Jaffe spoke of the needs and possibilities of Palestine and Mr. Straus read a telegram from Michael Williams, Catholic editor now in Vienna after a trip through Germany, stating that the situation of the Jews there was worse than has been stated and asking that denials of persecutions be not believed.
