The Municipal Council of the provincial town of Curitiba today decided to rename one of the central streets in the town “State of Israel Street.” The decision was voted as an expression of solidarity with the Jewish community following the desecration by vandals of 40 tombstones in the town’s Jewish cemetery.
The Jewish community had earlier thanked the Municipal Council for an offer to pay for the damage to the gravestones, estimated at $6,000, but Jewish groups expressed the desire to finance the repair work themselves.
