A libel suit with an anti-Semitic background was opened today in Plauen.
The suit was brought by German Foreign Minister Stresemann against Herr Mueller, editor of an anti-Semitic newspaper. Mueller published an article in which he stated that Stresemann was a business partner of Litwan, a Russian Jew who is now a German citizen. Mueller also charged that Litwan was a large contributor to the political funds of the Stresemann party and due to Stresemann’s favor he was able to dispose of supplies of the German army abroad to his advantage.
Litwan, who appeared on the witness stand today, testified that he has never entered into any business transaction outside of the control of the German authorities. A large part of his income, he stated, was given for charitable purposes. Herr Schacht, president of the Reichsbank stated in court that although Litwan has East European manners, he is a very honorable man. Stresemann declared on the witness stand that he knew that Litwan was a Jew but he saw no reason why he should not enter into a business partnership with him.
