Twenty-six Israeli crew members of the American-Israeli Line freighter Yafo were awaiting deportation proceedings at Ellis Island today following their removal from the vessel this week-end on orders from the Israeli Government. Meanwhile, the freighter was unloaded and made ready to return to Israel later in the week with a general cargo including machinery and foodstuffs.
Orders for the removal of the 26 seamen came from the Israeli consulate here after members of the consulate staff went aboard the strikebound ship to interview each member of the crew. Fourteen of the crew, in addition to eight cadets, agreed to end their strike. Replacements for the 26 will be signed on here.
