The Haifa plant of the Kaiser-Frazer automobile company was at a complete standstill today after 44 foremen and office workers walked out yesterday as a result of a dispute with management over a contract. The strike has the approval of the Histadrut, Israel’s federation of labor.
The Histadrut stated that the contract which the workers are demanding be signed immediately is similar to that in effect in other industries in the country. It provides for extension of most of the provisions of the current agreement plus severance pay provisions, a year’s pay as compensation in the event of disability or accident and two months’ maternity leave. When the company sought to have the stoppage called off so that negotiations could continue “without pressure,” the workers refused, pointing out that the talks began nine months ago.
