Nearly 200 Palestine immigration certificates have been distributed among Jewish students in Bohemia-Moravia and Carpatho-Russia, it was reported today from Prague.
Seventy-five of the students have registered for the Hebrew University in Jerusalem;40 will go to the Hebrew Technical Institute at Haifa; 10 to the new Bezalel Art School and 28 to the Hauser Conservatory. In addition, a number of certificates have been granted to students going to the Hebrew Gymnasium and to the Teachers seminary in Palestine.
Meanwhile, there has been an increase in the number of Jewish youths studying Hebrew in the “protectorate.” Under the direction of Mrs. Irma Pollak, many new classes have been formed. The shortage of teachers has necessitated format in of a Teachers’ Seminary, where 45 teachers are now undergoing special training. Since Hebrew books and dictionaries cannot be imported from abroad, because of exchange restrictions, Hebrew classes often have no more than one text book for an entire class.
Several hundred Jewish women are attending cooking classes recently opened in Prague by the Women’s international Zionist Organization. Certificates from these classes are regarded as sufficient by the British authorities for granting of permits to immigrate to England as domestics. More than 200 women with such certificates have already entered Britain.
