Prevented by the authorities from holding their convention here, anti-Semitic students from all parts of Roumania clashed with the police wounded the Police Perfect and injured several officers, and threw the Jewish population into a panic.
The students’ convention was to have opened Friday, but the authorities let it be known in advance by telegrams to all parts of Roumania that the meeting was illegal, and would not be tolerated.
On arrival here groups of students immediately repaired to the University campus, where they demolished the wing of one of the buildings. Forcefully ejected by the police from the campus, the fleeing students opened fire and bombarded the police with stones, some of the missiles striking the Chief of Police and his aids.
The disturbances continued until midnight when, after a shorr respite, the students appeared in the Jewish quarter, distributing hand bills urging the “distruction of the Jews”. Windows of several Jewish homes were shattered. Unaple to cope with the situation, the police appealed to the military authorites for aid. Soldiers aided by young Jews succeeded finally in quelling the riot.
