The Yivo Institute for Jewish Research reported today, in a 1961 year-end review, that substantial gains had been made in its program of research, documentation, publication, collection and preservation of source materials despite lack of a comparable gain in its financial condition.
The report, issued in connection with plans for Yivo’s 36th annual conference which opens January 6 in Hunter College Assembly hall here, listed a variety of publications and plans for research studies. A wide variety of basic research material dealing with the life of the vanished European Jewish communities was microfilmed during the year.
A major project now underway is a study of Jewish activities and interests of third-generation American Jews. This is under the direction of Leibush Lehrer, chairman of the Yivo Commission of Research. This study is a continuation of a similar study of second-generation American Jews which will appear soon.
