The whole weight and authority of the United Nations General Assembly should be used to open the doors of Palestine to Jewish immigration from Europe, Sumner Welles, former Under-Secretary of State, declared at a press conference here.
Welles supported President Truman’s plea for the immediate admission of 100,000 displaced Jews to Palestine and asserted that this number would only be a start toward solving the problem and that further immigration opportunities must be afforded the Jews. He also urged that the immigration policies of the western nations should be liberalized to give the Jews the greatest aid.
