A new statewide law permitting the opening of businesses on Sundays by enterprises that are closed Saturdays was on the way to enactment here today. The State Senate gave its preliminary approval to the amendment, which liberalizes the old Sunday-closing law. The House of Representatives passed the measure earlier in this year’s session. Signature of the bill by the Governor, as soon as the legislative approval is completed, has been assured.
An amendment calling upon businessmen to register their choice of Saturday or Sunday as the day of rest was defeated. Another amendment, adopted by both houses, gives the new law superceding status above certain city ordinances. A Minneapolis ordinance, providing for registration, is thus annulled. In St. Paul, an ordinance providing for Saturday or Sunday option will also be nullified.
