After a good deal of protest on the part of members of the city council, the Jews of Sunderland, a city in northern England, were today granted permission to make burials on Sundays. Although the city council’s cemetery committee had recommended that the request be granted some members of the council objected on the ground that it was an attack on Christian principles.
When the question finally came to a vote in the city council it was approved by vote of 37 to 13 with eight members not voting. In other parts of England Jews have long been permitted to bury their dead on Sundays.
